Asthma is a "chronic inflammatory disease of the airway" that causes the following symptoms:
-
wheezing
-
coughing
-
shortness of breath
-
chest tightness
People with asthma have extra sensitive airways. The airways react by narrowing or obstructing when they become irritated. Our allergy and asthma specialist can help you find relief with medication and lifestyle changes.
Allergic rhinitis, commonly referred to as hay fever, is characterized by sneezing, congestion and red, watery eyes. It is the result of the immune system's over-response to specific particles such as dust, dander, plant pollens, etc. It is a common illness affecting between 20-40 million people, but it can be treated with avoidance of the allergen, antihistamines and decongestants to name a few.
Rapid desensitization improves upon a well-established treatment for allergies called immunotherapy. Immunotherapy (allergy shots) usually works well for allergy sufferers, but it may take a patient several months of weekly injections before they experience any relief. Immunotherapy is the administration of gradually increasing amounts of an allergic material to a patient over a period of time. Rapid desensitization shortens the duration of immunotherapy to just one day, meaning a patient would spend one day in our office receiving a series of injections equivalent to months of weekly immunotherapy injections.
